Job Summary:

The Senior Accountant, Family Office Services is responsible for performing and overseeing the full cycle general accounting function for small to mid-size organizations, utilizing research skills, gathering client information necessary for filing, participating in tax planning, recognizing and communicating potential risks, and supervising and reviewing the work of Family Office Services Associates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform complete general ledger reconciliation, including the entire balance sheet, and apply accounting knowledge by properly recording transactions in a general ledger; create accounting records such as bill payments, client invoices, payroll, and others; identify and record adjustments; produce accurate financial statements.
  • Comprehend common financial statements and prepare draft financial statements for review; understand how line items/accounts function, including capital accounts, various forms of liabilities, and properly distinguish debits from credits; calculate/interpret KPIs for clients; identify positive and constructive trends and raise them to BDO management.
  • Conduct basic financial statement analysis and understand the finance and accounting functions generally performed by a business, including sales, purchasing, A/R, and common best practices/processes for how they operate.
  • Prepare financial budgets and forecasts and communicate actual to budget variances.
  • Plan basic engagements to include on-boarding and client delivery phases and develop an understanding of engagement economics, including billing and time entry, and adhere to Family Office Services best practices.
  • Interact with clients to gain information, documents, and data necessary to complete assigned tasks.
  • Identify and organize clients' financial information; prepare common financial reports and other schedules as requested; format reports so they are easily read and understood by BDO management and clients.
  • Review client information for accuracy; use deductive reasoning to identify anomalies or gaps and communicate significant client issues to supervisor.
  • Support drafting proposals and other documents explaining proposed solutions to clients.
  • Articulate Family Office Services' value proposition and understand our target market/client profile.
  • Apply our processes, systems, technology, and resources to manage workflow and ensure proper documentation and workpapers.
  • Review work products and work collaboratively with both Family Office Services and Business Service Center (BSC) team members.
  • Produce quality work and set priorities according to internal and external deadlines and project priority; raise priority setting conflicts to management, as needed.
  • Take personal accountability for work products and accept constructive feedback to guide future actions.
  • Prepare schedules to support the client's audit preparation and tax compliance requirements.
  • Participate in advanced special projects, as required.
  • Other duties as required.

Tax Related Duties:

  • Plan and execute projects related to tax and consulting processes and procedures.
  • Comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) and seek advice regarding issues and problems related to tax compliance and consulting.
  • Research public information.
  • Use the Firm's compliance software to maximize efficiency of tax returns.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May supervise and manage the day-to-day work assignments of Family Office Services Associates and Paraprofessionals.
  • Provide verbal and written performance feedback to Family Office Services Associates and Paraprofessionals, as necessary.
  • Act as mentor to Family Office Services Associates and Paraprofessionals.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education:

  • One of the following is required: Bachelor's degree, focus in Accounting or Finance, preferred, and three (3) or more years of experience performing general accounting transactions and functions, required; or Four (4) or more years performing general accounting transactions and functions with some consultative or business advisory experience without a degree, required.

Experience:

  • Consultative or business advisory experience, preferred.
  • Prior basic supervisory experience, preferred.

License/Certifications:

  • Currently enrolled in CPA certification exam, preferred.
  • CPA certification, preferred.

Software:

  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, required.
  • Experience utilizing industry standard accounting software, required.
  • Experience utilizing BSO (BDODrive) platform software such as Intuit's QuickBooks Online (QBO), Microsoft NAV, and CaseWare, preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understands GAAP and Tax and can apply it to basic financial statements.
  • Strong analytical and basic research skills.
  • Solid organizational skills, especially the ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details.
  • Ability to successfully multi-task while working independently or within a group environment.
  • Proven ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the firm.
  • Knows how finance and accounting functions, technology for supporting these functions, and tax planning can differ by industry and business structure; knows what is required from a compliance perspective and what is considered a standard or best practice for the industry or business structure.
  • Understands and explains tax planning considerations/concepts for various business entities; comprehends the information presented on different tax return forms.
  • Recognizes opportunities for innovation, including improvements for handling day-to-day matters and developing an understanding of process improvements.
  • Listens for and communicates client problems and challenges to management that may be opportunities to grow the business and relationships with clients. Educated in technology packages clients are using to support their accounting/finance functions; learns new technology quickly.
  • Capability to effectively guide a team of professionals and delegate work assignments as needed.

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

California Range: $84,000 - $110,000

Colorado Range: $72,000 - $90,000

NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $60,000 - $80,000

Washington Range: $80,000 - $95,000
