About the Job

This position is assigned to the Outpatient Psychology Services (OPS) and is responsible for providing individual, group, couples, and family psychotherapy. This position also provides patient education, consultation to other clinical staff, and supervision of psychology interns and fellows. In addition, this position serves as a counselor for the Employee Assistance Program and conducts clinical research.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide screening, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of depressive and anxiety-related disorders, as well as other mental health symptoms, with an emphasis on the application of time-limited, evidence-based treatment approaches.
  • Conduct diagnostic interview and comprehensive psychological assessment, to include personality, intellectual, cognitive, and emotional functioning.
  • Assess and provide treatments for sub-clinical symptoms of depression and anxiety, adjustment difficulties, and excessive use or misuse of alcohol or other drugs.
  • Provide psychological prevention services to patients at significant risk for psychological problems.
  • Provide individual and group interventions to support patients' mental health needs.
  • Provide clinical services through the use of telemental health technology.
  • Promote communication/interactions between medical team members, patients, and their families to facilitate the medical treatment process.
  • Provides counseling assistance and serves as a resource person for the medical center's Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Provide screening for cognitive deficits to address specific functional questions or to determine if a referral for a complete neuropsychological evaluation or dementia assessment is needed.
  • Provide behavioral medicine interventions to manage substance use, pain, disability, address sleep problems, facilitate weight loss, promote smoking cessation, and enhance medical compliance.

Qualifications
  • Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
  • Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed.
  • Internship: Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that was accredited by APA or CPA at the time the program was completed and that is consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.
  • Licensure: Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations
  • GS-11 Staff Psychologist: Experience. None beyond the basic requirements.
  • GS-12 Staff Psychologist: Experience. At least one year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11).
  • GS-13 Staff Psychologist: Experience. At least two years of experience as a professional psychologist, with at least one year equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.
