About the Job

The ACLU National Office is seeking a Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney to join the Voting Rights Project. This is a hybrid role that requires in-office presence two days a week or eight days a month.

Job Summary

The Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney will work on priority issues of the Voting Rights Project, including litigation, legislative advocacy, and public education. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in voting rights and civil liberties law, excellent research and writing skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a team.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in litigation of constitutional and statutory cases on a wide range of voting rights issues
  • Research and draft pleadings, briefs, and legal memoranda
  • Engage in discovery and motion practice, and conduct evidentiary hearings and oral arguments in the trial and appellate courts
  • Analyze legislation for potential litigation
  • Develop new cases, non-litigation advocacy projects, and identify and work with potential plaintiffs and witnesses
  • Work with and advise ACLU state affiliates
  • Provide technical assistance and expert legal advice to cooperating attorneys and others
  • Serve as a resource for ACLU legislative, policy, and campaign work
  • Engage in public speaking and articulating ACLU views to various audiences
  • Collaborate with staff across the organization to advance voting rights
  • Travel as required for litigation, conferences, and client development
Requirements
  • J.D. degree
  • Demonstrated years of litigation experience, including clerkships and fellowships
  • Appropriate bar membership permitting practice in New York or District of Columbia
  • Familiarity with voting rights, racial justice, and other civil liberties and civil rights issues is preferred
  • Commitment to those issues is essential
