Position Overview

The Lead Telecommunications Engineer will play a pivotal role in supporting project teams by managing a diverse range of project responsibilities while maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the telecommunications site development process. The focus of this role will be on the initiation of new site developments for macro and small cell installations, modifications to existing telecommunications facilities, fiber optic networks, and other project types as necessary. The Lead Engineer will be responsible for engineering tower and compound designs, as well as developing fiber optic network layouts, ensuring efficient job flow while overseeing multiple projects simultaneously. This position will assist the management team with task delegation, resource distribution, and ensuring the quality and timeliness of deliverables, all while leveraging knowledge of client-specific telecommunications equipment and their applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and engineer tower and compound locations, including site layout, grading, stormwater management, and culvert design, with a solid understanding of structural engineering principles.
  • Create construction plans for upgrades and modifications to telecommunications client equipment.
  • Review and prepare construction drawings for thoroughness prior to final professional engineering review.
  • Design new conduit routes for fiber optic utility companies from existing infrastructure to proposed locations in public rights-of-way and private properties.
  • Plan for the relocation of existing fiber optic facilities within public areas for both permanent and temporary needs.
  • Conduct analysis and design for various structural support systems utilizing materials such as steel, concrete, masonry, light-gage, and wood.
  • Perform calculations that comply with building code requirements for structural design and analysis.
  • Assist in the preparation of structural reports.
  • Collaborate with internal multidisciplinary teams to facilitate project completion and approvals.
  • Establish effective job flow by monitoring assigned tasks and prioritizing completion accordingly.
  • Adhere to CAD standards and templates.
  • Produce accurate drawings in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Stay informed about new telecommunications equipment and client-specific tools and their applications.
  • Evaluate designs for feasibility and constructability.
  • Conduct quality assurance and control reviews on reports, drawings, and construction documents prepared by engineering staff to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Review and approve structural analysis reports, construction drawings, and other contract documents with a keen attention to detail.
  • Work closely with management and internal stakeholders to ensure an efficient, effective, and innovative approach to meet client needs.
  • Provide mentorship and training to junior engineering team members.
  • Support management with the daily operations of the engineering team.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Engineering Technology is required.
  • A minimum of 4 years of engineering experience is required, with a preference for OSP Fiber experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is required; Professional Engineer (PE) certification is preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD is required; experience with Civil 3D is preferred.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with structural engineering software is required (e.g., RISA 3D, Enercalc, tnxTower, Mathcad).
  • Professional understanding of principles in transportation, civil (grading and site analysis), stormwater management, culvert design, structural, and geotechnical engineering.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand complex building, tower, structural, and construction drawings.
  • Knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards.
  • Experience in designing stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and landscaping plans.
  • Ability to review and analyze site documentation and gather necessary information to complete assignments.
  • Understanding of construction practices and principles.
  • Capability to research and apply engineering knowledge to develop feasible and innovative solutions.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills for complex designs.
  • Ability to work independently without supervision is essential.
  • Experience in telecommunications and/or utility sectors is required; structural analysis and design experience is preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of all telecommunications site development disciplines, including site acquisition, land use, construction management, and RF.
  • Familiarity with industry knowledge and technology trends is preferred.
  • Experience in developing and reviewing project quality plans, contract documents, and project specifications.
