Job Title: Safety Specialist, Associate

Join New Mexico State University as a Safety Specialist, Associate and contribute to the growth and development of our Environmental Health and Safety and Risk Management (EHS&RM) department.

About the Role:

This position supports EHS&RM operations and functions, department-wide. Responsibilities include data collection and entry of life safety equipment, monthly and annual inspections, emergency eyewash/safety shower and chemical fume hood annual testing and certification, and program compliance specialist support.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Data collection and entry of life safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, emergency exit lights, and pull stations.
  • Assist with monthly and annual inspections of life safety equipment.
  • Support emergency eyewash/safety shower and chemical fume hood annual testing and certification.
  • Provide program compliance specialist support, including EHS&RM Safety Hub, EHS&RM website, and online safety training maintenance functions.
  • Assist with hazardous material abatement activities, routine landfill compliance functions, safety compliance inspections, sealed source leak testing, routine contamination surveys, and other related tasks.
  • Support instructor-led safety training, including course setup and class monitoring activities for courses that require it.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge of industry standard safety and risk management processes and procedures applicable to university operations.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to read and interpret federal, state, and local regulations applicable to areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preferred prior NMSU life safety services experience.
  • Preferred remote pilot (UAS) experience.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, including extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, and other potentially dangerous materials/situations that require safety precautions/protective equipment.

Considerable physical activity is required, with heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.
