ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Dana Point is looking for dedicated and motivated students pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering to fill the role of Public Works Intern. This position offers a valuable opportunity for students to acquire practical experience within the Public Works & Engineering Department while gaining insights into municipal operations and responsibilities related to the engineering field.

This is a part-time, hourly position, limited to a maximum of 19 hours per week.

DEFINITION:

Under direct supervision, perform a range of entry-level or semi-skilled tasks to support the City’s Department of Public Works and Engineering Services. Responsibilities include conducting research, compiling and analyzing data, and performing routine administrative and technical support tasks. The incumbent will engage in projects that assist the City in achieving its goals while providing practical exposure to students or recent graduates pursuing careers in engineering or related disciplines.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

This classification serves as a part-time position designed for training in engineering or related fields and specific City department operations. This role is non-exempt under FLSA standards.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:

1. Assist with various Civil Engineering tasks in support of the Department of Public Works and Engineering Services.

2. Conduct field investigations, capture photographs, and prepare reports and presentations for assigned responsibilities.

3. Create AutoCAD drawings and exhibits based on engineering sketches, survey notes, and other relevant data for public works project design and construction.

4. Maintain and update records, including tracking lists, maps, and blueprints as required.

5. Organize and manage computer databases and logging systems for various plans, reports, and projects.

6. Assist in the inspection of Public Works construction projects.

7. Prepare illustrations and visual aids for meetings and presentations.

8. Support traffic studies and related research projects.

9. Document facility infrastructure and comply with Land Surveyors Act conditions.

10. Respond to inquiries and requests for information.

11. Prepare map and graphic presentations.

12. Assist in the development of contracts.

13. Perform additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Basic office procedures and customer service principles. Research methods and techniques. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Modern office practices and procedures. Proficiency in computer software programs including AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Ability to:

Understand and execute instructions. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Prepare correspondence independently. Establish cooperative working relationships. Operate a motor vehicle safely.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Typically, a combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation, with ongoing studies in civil engineering and at least one year in the program.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires occasional light lifting, standing, walking, and prolonged sitting. Hand dexterity is necessary for computer use and standard office equipment operation. Good hearing is essential for effective communication.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment is primarily office-based with minimal exposure to hazardous conditions. Occasional travel to meetings may be required.
