As a Senior Software Engineer at Understory, your focus will be on architecting and implementing web APIs and applications, integrating intricate data systems, and enhancing our state-of-the-art hyperlocal climate risk engine. You will collaborate with a dynamic team that prioritizes precision, innovation, and the utilization of data to inform decisions and address insurance challenges in the context of climate change.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Design and develop robust, scalable, and efficient applications utilizing Java, JavaScript, and Python.
  • Enhance data access for APIs through SQL and PostgreSQL.
  • Implement new features and infrastructure to meet rapidly changing business needs.
  • Quickly identify and resolve issues, documenting solutions and processes for future reference.
  • Oversee CI/CD pipelines to automate the building, testing, and deployment of applications. Configure and maintain server infrastructure to ensure high availability, performance, and reliability.
  • Work with complex datasets, particularly time series data, to derive valuable insights and automate workflows.
  • Integrate and manipulate geospatial data within applications to support innovative weather data and climate risk assessments.

You Are the Ideal Candidate If You:

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Have 5+ years of professional experience in designing and developing web or mobile applications.
  • Exhibit excellent problem-solving abilities and can independently manage multiple projects.
  • Demonstrate a disciplined work ethic with a passion for overcoming challenges and solving complex problems.
  • Possess experience in developing applications with relational databases and SQL.
  • Are familiar with web and backend development using Java and Maven, as well as modern frameworks for building and consuming APIs (preferred).
  • Have experience in building and maintaining data pipelines (preferred).
  • Possess knowledge in GIS and geospatial analysis (preferred).
  • Have familiarity with networking and cybersecurity concepts (preferred).
  • Are skilled in creating data visualizations and have a keen attention to detail (preferred).
