VCU Health's Acute Care Surgical Services is a distinguished unit recognized for excellence, featuring a 28-bed inpatient facility dedicated to various surgical specialties including Surgical Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Microsurgery, Bariatric Surgery, Colo-Rectal Surgery, and Urology. Our unit provides comprehensive care for a diverse range of surgical conditions, including critically ill and injured patients. As the only Level I Trauma Center in the region, we are committed to delivering the highest standard of care.

As a Clinical Nurse I, you will integrate your technical skills and theoretical knowledge to support patient and family needs. This role involves assisting the healthcare team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and ensuring comfort. You will provide guidance and education while beginning to develop leadership skills within the unit. Your responsibilities will include delivering and accurately documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary care plan, as well as safely administering prescribed medications.

In the Clinical Nurse II role, you will demonstrate advanced clinical skills and apply your knowledge to specific patient populations. This position requires recognizing changes in patient conditions and intervening as necessary. You will mobilize resources to meet the unique needs of patients and families, provide direction and education, and take on leadership responsibilities within the unit.

The Clinical Nurse III position entails demonstrating clinical expertise at the unit level, anticipating changes in patient situations, and serving as a role model in clinical practice. You will be responsible for delivering and documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a comprehensive care plan, as well as safely administering medications.

Licensure and Certification Requirements:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state is required for all clinical levels.

Experience Requirements:
Clin I: No prior experience required.
Clin II: 12 to 24 months of RN experience.
Clin III: Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience.

Preferred Experience:
Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting.
Clin II and Clin III: Experience in academic healthcare settings or with similar patient populations.

Education Requirements:
All clinical levels require a Diploma or Associate's Degree from an accredited nursing program. RNs without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of hire.

Independent Actions:
Clinical nurses will follow documented physician orders and practice within the regulations governing nursing in Virginia, guided by the ANA Code of Ethics and established nursing standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Organizing work and supervising others in carrying out assignments is expected at all clinical levels.

Additional Position Requirements:
Clinicians are required to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules established in coordination with management.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift 20-50 lbs, with exposure to potentially hazardous materials. This role requires prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, and reaching.
