Position Overview

The HVAC Technician B is responsible for the maintenance, inspection, operation, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems within the facilities. This role ensures that all systems are functioning optimally and in compliance with relevant regulations and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough inspections and adjustments of HVAC and refrigeration systems to identify potential hazards and malfunctions.
  • Maintain and service all HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including cooling towers and pumps, ensuring they operate efficiently.
  • Perform repairs or replacements on faulty HVAC and refrigeration components, including motors, controls, valves, and compressors.
  • Document all maintenance activities and repairs accurately, maintaining detailed logs and records of equipment performance and service history.
  • Collaborate with other technicians and contractors to ensure systems operate within their designed parameters and recommend necessary repairs or modifications.
  • Address deficiencies noted in service orders, executing installations that minimize material waste and enhance future maintenance access.
  • Assist other trades as needed and support major campus events, contributing to overall campus operations.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as required by the department.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Certification in refrigerant recovery from an accredited program; High School diploma or equivalent; Massachusetts Refrigeration license; completion of safety training as mandated.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience or a combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment, demonstrating professionalism and courtesy in interactions.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical documents, including safety guidelines and maintenance manuals.
  • Capable of writing clear instructions and documenting equipment issues and solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to manage inventory and order necessary replacement parts for maintenance tasks.

Work Environment

Must possess a valid U.S. Driver's License and maintain an insurable driving record. Completion of vehicle training within the first 60 days of employment is required.

Physical Environment:

  • Regular exposure to humid conditions and moving mechanical parts.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals and extreme weather conditions.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Moderate noise levels are typical.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and participate in an on-call emergency response program.

Physical Demands

  • Daily operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Regular use of hands for various tasks, including lifting and maneuvering equipment.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and reaching, with occasional sitting.
  • Ability to lift and move weights up to 100 pounds as needed.
  • Regular climbing and balancing at heights up to 25 feet.
  • Visual acuity for close work and depth perception.

Additional Skills

Advancement criteria include four to six years of relevant experience, knowledge of control systems, and a valid Massachusetts Refrigeration license or equivalent experience, along with a positive recommendation from a supervisor.
