Duke University Hospital, located in Durham, North Carolina, is recognized as one of the leading hospitals in the United States and holds the distinction of being the top hospital in North Carolina. As the largest facility within Duke Health, it boasts 1,048 patient beds and 65 operating rooms, along with a wide array of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including a regional emergency/trauma center and an endo-surgery center.
Position Summary:
The Radiation Therapist is responsible for administering ionizing radiation to patients across various age groups, following the directives of the Radiation Oncologist and under the supervision of the Chief Therapist.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately deliver the prescribed radiation therapy regimen with minimal oversight.
- Verify prescriptions, diagnoses, patient charts, and identification.
- Clearly explain procedures to patients, including communication methods during treatment and emergency protocols.
- Reinforce the Radiation Oncologist's guidance regarding treatment reactions and patient care.
- Prepare treatment rooms and equipment in accordance with the prescribed protocols, including the use of immobilization devices and lead protection.
- Safely transfer patients to treatment couches, ensuring careful handling of any medical devices.
- Monitor treatment times and deliver the prescribed radiation doses.
- Maintain constant visual and auditory communication with patients during their treatment sessions.
- Observe and document patient reactions, reporting any unusual occurrences to nursing staff or the Radiation Oncologist.
- Adhere to radiation safety protocols for both patients and staff.
- Assist in simulation and tumor localization procedures, as well as dosimetry tasks.
- Obtain weekly port films for review by the Radiation Oncology team.
- Participate in departmental performance improvement initiatives and assist in training new staff members.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Completion of a 24-month radiology technology program and a 12-month radiation therapy technology course; or
- Completion of a 24-month radiation therapy technology program; or
- Registered nurses who have completed a 12-month radiation therapy technology course; or
- A Bachelor of Science degree in radiation therapy.
Experience:
- A minimum of one year of clinical training in Radiation Therapy.
Licensure and Certification:
- Current licensure as mandated by state or national authorities and/or certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy.
- Maintain ARRT certification with at least 12 hours of continuing education annually.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Proficient in the principles and practices of ionizing radiographic and radiation therapy equipment operation.
- Knowledgeable in human anatomy and patient positioning for effective treatment delivery.
- Capable of administering CPR in emergency situations.
