Job Description

Under the direction of the Director of IDD Authority Services and Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA)-Independent Practice, the IDD Crisis Intervention Specialist (CIS) provides services to eligible individuals to gain access to medical, social, educational, and other needed services for behavioral crisis situations and reintegration into the community after a crisis situation.

The CIS provides information about IDD programs and services to individuals with IDD and their families and IDD providers in the local service area. They identify individuals with IDD in the LIDDA's local service area who are at risk of requiring crisis services, such as individuals who exhibit repeated and severe behavior disturbances that jeopardize the individual's safety or current living arrangement.

The CIS completes admissions and discharges to the Crisis Respite Unit (CRU) for the two designated IDD beds while providing referrals and resources to continue any further service supports. The CIS is responsible for communicating to stakeholders, including IDD providers, advocacy organizations, law enforcement, and schools about this position and the general duties of the position.

Position will have clinical oversight by the Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA)-Independent Practice/Certified Authorized Provider in addition to the Administrative Supervisor.

Responsibilities
  1. Collaborate with the Service Coordinator, other members of the service planning team, and paid provider, if any, to identify prevention strategies to avoid potential crisis events and to promote the individual's coping skills.
  2. Training and support needs that provide the greatest chance of success living in the community, such as scheduled crisis respite to avoid a potential crisis event.
  3. Support the Service Coordinator's provision of on-going follow-up and monitoring activities, including assisting the Service Coordinator, other members of the service planning team, and paid provider, if any, in addressing concerns and issues identified during follow-up and monitoring visits, such as involvement with law enforcement or emergency room visits.
  4. Complete a LIDDA Screening Crisis Safety Plan to determine if a Functional Behavioral Assessment or Crisis Therapeutic Support Response Plan is needed and in-services the individual, family, and agencies on that plan.
  5. Education, training, consultation, and collaboration is provided to members of the Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT)/crisis team, law enforcement, agencies in the community, internal Center staff, and others as appropriate to provide therapeutic support.
  6. When a person who has previously received services from a LIDDA is processed into a correctional institution, facility personnel will run a continuity of care query in the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (TLETS) system to identify if the person has a history of receiving intellectual and/or developmental disability (IDD) services from a LIDDA.
  7. Consult difficult cases with supervisors and the Transition Support Team (TST) and make appropriate referrals.
  8. Participation in routine meetings is a requirement.

All job duties assigned include those identified in the HHSC Performance Contract and in the Health & Human Services Commission (HHSC) LIDDA Handbook. HHSC mandated training is required for all training modules on the Mental Health Wellness for Individuals with IDD website within timeframes identified in the contract and handbook.

Helen Farabee Center incorporates principles of trauma-informed care, which includes cultural sensitivity, in all areas of service delivery. Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience:

Must possess a current Texas licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW), or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). The LCSW, LMSW, or LPC must adhere to all licensing rules and the Texas Occupations Code and Texas State Board of Examiners of Social Workers and Professional Counselors. Fully licensed LPC preferred.

Must have at least 2 years of experience in working with individuals with IDD who have a behavioral health or crisis therapeutic support needs or linking people with IDD to behavioral health supports. Training and knowledge in behavioral support and crisis interventions is a requirement.

Must have current driver's license and be insurable under Center insurance. Position may require use of personal vehicle in performance of job-related duties. Must pass and maintain all Center mandated trainings.

  • Extensive knowledge of Intellectual Disabilities service delivery system.
  • Knowledge and education in behavioral interventions and crisis collaboration.
  • Demonstrate good documentation and organizational skills.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must possess knowledge of LIDDA principles.
  • Skilled in the use of personal and network computers, word processing, database, spreadsheet, and office management software (Microsoft Office), familiarity with CARE, SFTP Globalscape, MBOW, and SmartCare a plus.
