Job Summary

As a Phlebotomy Technician at Prisma Health, you will play a vital role in collecting specimens from patients and ensuring their safety and comfort. You will access samples into the computer system for accurate testing and billing, and obtain signed documents as needed. Your responsibilities will also include reviewing outstanding workload reports, performing Point of Care testing and sample processing if assigned, and communicating with patients and guests in a timely and courteous manner.

Key Accountabilities
  • Collect and process specimens using correct technique, policy, and protocol, and verify patient and specimen identification.
  • Input and assess information via the hospital and laboratory computer systems accurately and timely, and review collection lists, unreceived lists, tracking logs, and telephone log for completion of work.
  • Follow safety procedures and respond correctly and immediately to safety violations and safety drills, and report and document personal exposure to hazardous or infectious situations.
  • Process specimens for testing, including identifying, sorting, aliquoting, centrifuging, and labeling specimens appropriately, and assure proper storage and retention of all specimens for their designated time.
  • Restock items in use, maintain a clean and orderly work area, and monitor expiration dates of all supplies and reagents.
  • Communicate with patients and guests in a timely and courteous manner, and use positive interpersonal skills in all patient/customer interactions.
  • Perform account registrations and orders tests in multiple laboratory systems, collect consents for preauthorizations and Advanced Beneficiary Notice as required, and complete clerical duties such as scanning of all relative patient data and tracking monthly workload performance.
  • Perform POC testing accurately if assigned, using established protocol and QC, and notify appropriate caregiver of critical values.
  • Instruct new employees and students in procedure, technique, and theory as assigned, and document proficiency on checklist.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3 Month training in phlebotomy Certification
  • Previous phlebotomy experience or training in formal programs which include phlebotomy are qualified as candidates
