Job Summary:

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a highly skilled Registered Respiratory Therapist to join our team as an ECMO Specialist. As a key member of our Respiratory Care Department, you will be responsible for operating and monitoring the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) circuit for patients who require this life-saving support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Continuously monitor the function of the ECMO system, including the centrifugal pump, membrane oxygenator, heating unit, and cannula placement.
  • Monitor the structural integrity of the ECMO circuit and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
  • Work in conjunction with the nurse, perfusionist, and provider to ensure that patients on ECMO have adequate end-organ perfusion, maintain acid-base balance, and hemodynamic stability within ordered parameters.
  • Effectively and rapidly intervene during critical ECMO emergencies, including separating the patient from ECMO, troubleshooting, and correcting the problem, and returning the patient to ECMO support as soon as possible.

Requirements:

  • Currently licensed in respiratory care by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Division of Professional Licensure.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential effective January 2017 for new hires.
  • Minimum of an Associate's degree or equivalent in Respiratory Care.
  • Satisfactory completion of the UMass Memorial Medical Center ECMO specialist training course.
  • Ongoing satisfactory completion of periodic skills testing and competency drills to maintain ECMO specialist credentialing.

Preferred Qualifications:

ACLS certificationCurrent or working towards a bachelor's degree in respiratory care or other healthcare-related curriculum.Minimum two years of adult critical care experience.Pediatric experience.
