Legal Counsel for Correctional Officers

Position Overview:

The California Correctional Peace Officers' Association (CCPOA) is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Staff Counsel/Attorney. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with correctional peace officers, providing essential legal support and representation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver legal advice and representation to CCPOA and its members.
  • Engage in various labor relations and employment matters involving public agencies.
  • Participate in administrative hearings and litigation in both state and federal courts.
  • Support union activities and foster strong relationships within the organization.
  • Represent peace officers during Internal Affairs interviews and related hearings.
  • Assist in critical incident investigations, including officer-involved shootings.
  • Maintain a dynamic and engaging work environment.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide legal counsel as necessary.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all client-related matters.
  • Adhere to professional responsibility standards as outlined by the California State Bar.
  • Be prepared for extensive periods of sitting while performing legal tasks.
  • Interact with clients, opposing counsel, and various stakeholders in a professional manner.
  • Lift items up to 25 pounds as required.
  • Willingness to travel on short notice to various locations, primarily within Northern California.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a Juris Doctorate or equivalent degree from an accredited institution, be admitted to the California State Bar, and have a working knowledge of relevant software tools. A valid California State Driver's License and the ability to pass a criminal background check are also required.
