About the Position:

This position is located within the Forensic Toxicology Drug Testing Laboratory (FTDTL), at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Responsibilities:
  • Conducts forensic toxicological testing for emerging drugs of abuse.
  • Performs medical and forensic toxicology research.
  • Assists with implementation of new methodologies into the laboratory.
  • Performs scientific assessments making recommendations concerning corrective actions in the drug detection programs.
  • Serves as a technical and scientific subject matter expert in the troubleshooting of existing and new drug extraction and detection methodologies.
  • Testifies in courts as an expert witness, providing technically authoritative support to attorneys.

  • Must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.
Qualifications:
  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).
  • You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.
Basic Requirement for Chemist (Forensic Toxicology):
  • A Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
  • OR
  • B. Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Additional Requirements:
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service which includes performing scientific assessments to provide input for testimonies in court and using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry to conduct research.
Education:
  • If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
