Job Overview

As a Container Yard Operations Manager at Supra National Express Inc., you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our container yard. This position involves managing fleet maintenance scheduling, inspections, and inventory management. You will be responsible for utilizing various systems such as Transportation Management System (TMS), Fleet Management Systems (FMS), and Yard Management System (YMS) to optimize efficiency.

The ideal candidate will have two or more years of supervisor experience in working with a team, in-depth knowledge of fleet safety with DOT federal/state guidelines, and equivalent combination of education and experience. A Class A License is a plus but not required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage fleet maintenance scheduling and inspections
  • Manage a neat and orderly storage lot oriented toward maximizing efficiency in servicing the plant needs
  • Utilize company's Transportation Management System (TMS), Fleet Management Systems (FMS), and Yard Management System (YMS)
  • Maintain accurate stack inventory from containers and chassis received and delivered to/from vessel, gate, rail, and warehouse
  • Assist with and monitor vendor performance on the container yard
  • Manage and maintain fuel card system for accuracy and security. Daily audit of all fuel purchases
  • Perform safety checks as required and report tractor safety-related deficiencies
  • Well-versed in the FMCSR, CA BIT Program and other state and federal motor vehicle safety programs
  • Assist with transportation policy development (SOPS)
  • Train new staff in assigned duties, or delegate training responsibility to other experienced staff
  • Monitor quantity and quality of jobs being performed throughout the day, providing guidance and advice, as necessary
  • Communicate with CEO throughout the day regarding progress and any problems or issues
  • Assist with regional goals to eliminate as much risk (cost exposure) as possible (i.e. Reduce detention, storage and TONU and wait time charges)
  • Audit adherence to General and Job Specific OSHA Compliance requirements
  • Manage the updating of employee training records and reports
  • Coaching and educating the workforce on safety/compliance rules and regulations
  • Conduct or coordinate driver training in areas such as safety rules and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment
  • Responsible for accounting for records involving container numbers, gross weights, tare weights, and net weights on the scale log sheet to include source and type of material
  • Bonus/incentive administration, and safe associate reward and recognition programs
  • Communicate using cellular telephone or 2-way radio with dispatch, operations, and plant personnel

Requirements:

  • Two or more years of supervisor experience in working with a team
  • In-depth knowledge of fleet safety with DOT federal/state guidelines and other safety related certifications preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Class A License is a plus but not required
  • Capable and willing to operate all of the major types of container field equipment to include, but not limited to: Jockey Truck, Forklift, Forklift with chassis flipper attachment, Toplift (full and empty), RTG, Grunt, and RMG; operating in a safe and efficient manner while loading and unloading containers and chassis

Skills and Abilities:

  • Have the ability of working at heights of up to 75 feet. Perform manual labor involving lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, kneeling, climbing, walking, pushing, and pulling
  • Be in good physical condition with excellent peripheral vision, night vision, depth perception, can distinguish colors, and have good hearing. Vision requirements: Visual acuity of 20/40 with or without corrective lenses for each eye, minimum depth perception of 6/9, and minimum peripheral vision of 70 degrees for each eye
  • Must have good eye-hand-foot coordination, the ability to follow instructions, and perform routine, repetitive work
  • Must have the ability to work in and make the work adjustment according to changes occurring in various weather conditions i.e., hot, cold, humid, wet, etc. Carry the ability to successfully complete training on new technology, as automation is introduced into the job

Computer Skills:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must have experience in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
