Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Physician Assistant to join our team in the Emergency Department at Mount Sinai Health System. As a Physician Assistant, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care, working collaboratively with our team of physicians and other healthcare professionals to deliver exceptional patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform focused or comprehensive histories and physical examinations on ED patients, and formulate a diagnostic and treatment plan.
  • Implement treatment protocols and undertake clinical decision making, under the supervision of an Emergency Medicine attending, for patients in the ED Observation Unit during its hours of operation.
  • Write orders for diagnostic tests, medications, consultations, immunizations and clinic referrals.
  • Review, interpret and document the results of the diagnostic tests ordered.
  • Confer with the supervising Attending Physician and nursing staff to ensure delivery of optimum quality of patient care and to keep them apprised of clinical developments, patient concerns, etc.
  • Write prescriptions in accordance with hospital guidelines.
  • Counsel patients when appropriate on health education issues and disease prevention.
  • The PA must present all cases to the supervising Attending Physician.
  • All referrals for consultation will be discussed with and approved by the supervising Attending Physician.
  • The PA must review all EKGs, laboratory and radiologic results with the supervising Attending Physician prior to discharging the patient from the ED.
  • Perform other duties pursuant to clinical responsibility, such as arranging follow up for patients, obtaining informed consent from patients, recalling patients for further evaluation and treatment, and escorting patients when necessary to other areas of the hospital or interhospital transfers, inform patients of necessary post discharge instructions as required.
  • Complete and document participation in continuing medical education required of physician assistants in order to meet requirements for certification, including assigned lectures and conferences.
Requirements
  • Completion of NYS approved program for the training of physician assistants or specialist assistants, usually via Bachelor of Science program or degree in closely related field.
  • Registration required with NYS as Physician Assistant.
  • Certification with the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (or equivalent organization) preferred for Physician Assistant; mandatory for Senior Physician Assistants.
  • Certification in ACLS and PALS required.
  • High level of analytical ability required to effectively and expeditiously diagnose and treat medical/surgical problems under the direction of the supervising Attending Physician.
  • Interacts with various internal hospital medical and administrative and professional staff in the course of routine clinical duties.
Working Conditions
  • Physician Assistant may work under a variety of conditions from pleasant to uncomfortable.
  • Hazardous conditions may exist in the ED, such as patients who exhibit unstable, violent or aggressive behavior.
  • The Physician Assistant may be exposed to bio hazardous substances, such as blood-borne pathogens, through the nature of work performed.
