General Overview

Engages in advanced nutrition services activities; Responsibilities include evaluating food choices and dietary programs; overseeing and assessing services; addressing complaints and shortcomings; and offering guidance, technical support, and referrals concerning nutrition and dietary services. May provide training to others; Operates under general supervision, with considerable latitude for independent decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develops educational materials and conducts training sessions focused on nutrition.

2. Explains nutritional policies and principles to various professional and community groups.

3. Conducts interviews with clients and their families to gather information on dietary requirements.

4. Investigates concerns and issues related to dietary and nutrition services.

5. Monitors and assesses program operations to ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations, as well as nutritional, safety, sanitation, and quality standards.

6. Provides expert consultation and technical support to facilitate the creation of nutrition education initiatives.

7. Offers nutrition education and dietary counseling services.

8. Performs technological testing and analysis of food products and compiles results.

9. Assists in formulating departmental policies and procedures.

10. May provide training to other staff members.

11. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in any of the following fields:
  • Nutrition Sciences
  • Human Nutrition or Dietetics
  • Community Nutrition
  • Public Health Nutrition
  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Home Economics with a major in Food and Nutrition and 24-semester hours of credit in food & nutrition
Two (2) years of experience in nutrition or dietetic work.

Licenses and Certifications:

May require licensure as a nutritionist or dietitian.

Must possess a valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license.

Must be eligible for coverage by the County's insurance provider.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Familiarity with food and nutrition principles, food systems management, and food science and technology.

Proficient interviewing skills.

Ability to provide counseling on nutrition, interpret relevant laws and regulations, design nutrition and dietary programs, conduct food technology and nutrition research, communicate effectively, and train others.

Ability to derive satisfaction from the growth and development of the program.

Active participation in community and professional organizations.

Good physical and mental health (Immunization Record).
