About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Special Education Support Professional to join our team at the Ohio Department of Education. As a key member of our support staff, you will play a vital role in ensuring the success of students with special needs.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing classroom support and student personal care services under the supervision of a certified teacher. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively with students, teachers, and other school staff to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Main Responsibilities
  • Support students with special needs in a variety of classroom settings, including individual and group instruction;
  • Assist with physical activities, such as transferring, positioning, and lifting students as needed;
  • Monitor students on an emergency basis when the teacher is absent or unavailable;
  • Participate in crisis outburst training and assist the teacher in controlling students' physical and emotional outbursts;
  • Supervise non-classroom activities, such as arrival/departure, lunch, field trips, library, computer lab, and bus loading/unloading procedures;
  • Prepare and distribute classroom materials, maintain records, and perform clerical work related to classroom activities.
Requirements
  • Certification as an education aide from the Ohio Department of Education;
  • Meet mandated state and federal qualifications, including completion of higher education credit hours/courses or passing a sanctioned professional standards test;
  • Comply with drug-free workplace rules and board policies;
  • Ability to physically assist students with disabilities, interact comfortably and confidently with the public, and lift a minimum of 50 pounds;
  • Successful completion of communicable disease, child abuse/neglect, behavioral management, CPR, and/or first aid may be required as a condition of employment.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will be expected to work in a fast-paced educational setting, interacting with students, teachers, and other school staff. This position requires standing, balancing, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and walking for extended periods. Exposure to adverse weather conditions, temperature extremes, and potential allergens may also occur.

Compensation

The estimated salary range for this position is $40,000 - $60,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
