Job Summary

Geisinger Health System is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant to join our team in an outpatient setting. As a Certified Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain and document patient information, including reason for visit, weight, vital signs, and medication review.
  • Prepare examination and treatment rooms between cases, ensuring a clean and safe environment for patients.
  • Assist patients as needed to prepare for visits with providers, maintaining patient safety and privacy.
  • Provide direct patient care as directed by providers, including performing EKGs, wound dressings, and supporting minor surgical procedures.
  • Administer medications according to policy and procedure, after validation of knowledge and demonstration of competency.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens, completing associated paperwork accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform phlebotomy and assist in specific laboratory functions, relative to testing, reporting, and quality assurance of laboratory specimens.
  • Support patient care and functioning of the clinic, including matching and filing ancillary department reports, consultation, and other medical reports in patients' medical records.
  • Document in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record, using the electronic medical record and scheduling system.
  • Complete referrals and pre-authorizations as needed, collecting co-payments.
  • Assist with orientation of new personnel, under the direction of the provider and/or site lead.
  • Execute and document ongoing patient communication, prioritizing communications to the provider, responding to patient questions and requests to ensure efficient use of provider time and timely response to patient needs.
  • Reinforce patient education as directed by the provider, supporting patient understanding of instructions.
  • Inventory medical/surgical supplies and pharmaceuticals, non-controlled substances only, to ensure adequate supply levels, verify expiration dates, document utilization, optimize organizational efficiency, and space.
  • Prepare and clean instruments, following protocols for sterilization and disinfection, including high-level disinfection of instruments and equipment.
  • Clean/set up examination rooms between patients, using established infection prevention protocols.
  • Follow hand hygiene and appropriate infection prevention precautions, routinely inspecting/observing condition and operation of diagnostic equipment and instrumentation to ensure proper operation and identify need for preventive and/or corrective maintenance.
  • Responsible for actively participating in patient safety and quality improvement programs.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Graduate from Specialty Training Program (Preferred)
  • Minimum of 1 year-Related work experience (Preferred)
  • Certification(s) and License(s): Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months, Certified Medical Assistant
