ROLE OVERVIEW:
The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is tasked with the precise execution of specimen evaluations, maintenance of laboratory instruments, and adherence to quality assurance protocols, encompassing both moderate and high complexity laboratory assessments.
This role involves the initiation and compliance with quality assurance and safety regulations. The specialist will also assist in specimen collection and facilitate patient flow as necessary. Commitment to the Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards, is essential.Key Responsibilities:
PRIMARY DUTIES:
*Phlebotomy experience Required*
Assists in conducting phlebotomy and gathering necessary specimens from patients as directed. Ensures pre-authorization and completes relevant consent documentation prior to the collection of limited coverage tests.
Provides assistance with specialized procedures as required (e.g., bone marrow collections in the examination room).
Adheres to laboratory protocols for specimen management and processing, test evaluations, reporting, and maintaining patient result records. Sends specimens to external laboratories for tests not conducted in-house. Processes incoming requests for laboratory testing, including reference laboratory specimens.
Conducts specimen evaluations across all Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology samples.
Maintains and operates all laboratory apparatus, performing routine maintenance as specified.
Follows the laboratory's quality control guidelines and documents all quality control activities, instrument calibrations, and maintenance tasks. Accurately records lot numbers for all controls, calibrators, and reagents.
Engages in proficiency testing by conducting sample evaluations and reporting findings at least annually.
Prepares peripheral blood smears and executes complete WBC differentials.
Conducts microscopic assessments of urinary sediment, documenting results on the appropriate worksheets and computer systems while performing file maintenance. Processes specimens for external testing.
Adheres to laboratory policies when test systems fall outside established performance levels.
Identifies issues that may negatively impact test performance or result reporting, taking corrective actions or notifying a supervisor as necessary.
Documents all corrective measures taken when test systems deviate from established performance standards.
Maintains accurate documentation as outlined by the quality assurance program, including accessioning logs, test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists.
Verifies all critical results and ensures accurate follow-up documentation.
Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies, ensuring all materials are suitable for patient testing. Prepares reagents, stains, and other chemical solutions as required. Restocks laboratory areas as necessary.
Processes in-house and incoming results for patient charting.
Charts patient results promptly as required.
Accurately identifies and bands patients for blood product transfusions, processing properly labeled specimens in accordance with local blood bank policies.
Complies with all OSHA regulations and Universal Precautions procedures.
Adheres to applicable regulatory agency standards.
Ensures proper disposal of hazardous materials.
Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
Upholds confidentiality regarding all patient and medical staff information.
Qualifications:
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate's degree in medical technology or laboratory science. Current state licensure if required. AMT, ASCP, or equivalent certification is preferred but not mandatory. This position is entry-level and requires 0-3 years of experience. Prior phlebotomy experience is essential.
