Position Overview:

This role is essential for the upkeep of vehicles and equipment utilized at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in daily discussions with team members regarding the status of vehicle repairs and those awaiting maintenance.
  • Identify necessary components for repair completion, including parts and tools.
  • Evaluate required repairs and prioritize tasks accordingly.
  • Conduct inspections on vehicles to assess repair needs.
  • Communicate repair parts and supply requirements to the Equipment Shop Supervisor.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of tools, parts, and supplies.
  • Ensure precise data entry into the automated fleet management system.
  • Facilitate training sessions for inmates using the Automotive Society of Excellence (ASE) Study Guides.
  • Secure all tools and facilities at the end of each workday.
  • Drive state vehicles as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Inspection and diagnostic procedures for power/drive train systems.
  • Repair techniques for electrical systems.
  • Hydraulic system diagnostics.
  • Operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Scheduled preventive maintenance practices.

Skills in:

  • Utilizing computerized diagnostic tools for troubleshooting.
  • Employing specialized tools for vehicle service and repair.
  • Preparing accurate repair estimates.
  • Conducting quality control inspections.

Ability to:

  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Perform safety inspections and preventive maintenance.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Manage and prioritize repair schedules for a large fleet.

Preferred Qualifications:

Within the first year of employment, candidates must obtain specific certifications, including DOT Brake Inspector and DOT Commercial Vehicle Inspector certifications. Additionally, possessing Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in multiple categories and having extensive experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair is preferred.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Successful candidates must pass a background check, drug screening, and medical examination. A valid driver's license and a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements are required within the first six months of employment.
