Position Overview

The Student Support Specialist plays a crucial role in fostering a positive educational environment by addressing behavioral and social challenges faced by students. This position is integral to the support system for both school personnel and families, ensuring that effective behavior intervention strategies are in place for eligible students. The Specialist will work closely with the School Leader to enhance student well-being and academic success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement targeted small group and large group sessions focused on enhancing social-emotional health.
  • Conduct and document functional behavior assessments and develop comprehensive behavior support and intervention plans to create a safe and conducive learning atmosphere.
  • Gather and analyze behavioral data to inform practice and improve student outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the educational team to ensure the consistent application of behavior support strategies.
  • Deliver social skills training to selected students using evidence-based practices and approved curricula.
  • Provide guidance and support to educators through modeling, observation, and collaborative planning.
  • Engage in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, 504 meetings, and Student Study Team (SST) meetings to share and gather necessary information for behavior plans.
  • Work in partnership with families, agencies, and the school community to implement behavior support strategies effectively.
  • Maintain accurate records to track the progress of behavior interventions.
  • Facilitate workshops and training sessions on classroom management techniques to empower educators in handling challenging behaviors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the overall mission of the school.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (Required).
  • Certification as a School Counselor (Required).
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience (Required).
  • At least two years of experience working with students in educational or residential settings (Required).
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Understanding of child development and diverse learning styles.
  • Expertise in behavior intervention techniques.
  • Knowledge of emotional and behavioral disabilities.
  • Ability to implement de-escalation strategies effectively.
  • Strong collaborative skills to facilitate group consensus.
  • Proficient in data collection, summarization, and analysis.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capacity to manage sensitive situations with professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of KIPP Memphis.
Additional Requirements
  • Dedication to serving underserved student populations (Required).
  • Experience in conducting functional behavior assessments and developing intervention plans (Required).
  • Training in positive behavioral strategies and crisis intervention techniques (Required).
  • State teaching credential or willingness to pursue one (Preferred).
  • Specialization in Special Education, Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology (Preferred).
