Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Special Education Teaching Assistant to join our team at Albemarle County Public Schools. The successful candidate will provide support to students with special needs, working closely with our special education teachers to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist special education teachers in implementing instructional plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with special needs.
  • Maintain accurate records and data related to student progress and training.
  • Develop and maintain a safe and organized learning environment, including setup and operation of audio-visual equipment.
  • Support students with physical and medical needs, including toileting, feeding, and positioning.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of behavior management programs.
  • Assist with clerical duties, such as typing, filing, and duplicating, as needed.
  • Supervise and train students during non-instructional periods, including lunch and recess.
  • Collaborate with special education teachers and other staff members to ensure a comprehensive and supportive learning environment.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; CPR certification a plus.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a positive attitude towards students with special needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to lift up to 80 pounds and perform physical activities necessary for the movement and comfort of students.
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing circumstances.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will work in a school setting, with frequent walking, standing, and light lifting required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Regular contact with students, parents, and staff is required, as well as occasional attendance at parent conferences and staff meetings.
