About the Role

Sovah Health - Danville is seeking a skilled Laboratory Assistant II to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing technical and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform phlebotomy and receive, prepare, and process patient samples before analysis.
  • Handle telephone inquiries and perform computer and billing functions.
  • Provide registration services, including registering patients, reviewing and updating demographic and insurance information, and copying insurance cards and photo IDs.
  • Verify proper patient and/or specimen identification, payer type, and diagnosis code before processing specimens.
  • Assist with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing, and transporting specimens.
  • Perform clerical duties, including answering phones, data entry, and filing.
  • Communicate test results to appropriate healthcare providers.
  • Ensure that specimens are received or accessioned and labeled accurately and completely.
  • Distribute specimens, results, etc., to appropriate departments in a timely manner.
  • Notify department supervisor of significant problems related to specimens, instruments, or test orders.
  • Assess sample adequacy and recognize samples of unacceptable quality; document and inform client of problem.
  • Print reports as necessary to appropriate locations, ensuring patient confidentiality.
  • Monitor outpatient orders entered into the computer and assure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Perform routine blood draws, including venipuncture and finger/heel stick techniques.
  • Label specimens correctly by recording appropriate information on the collection containers.
  • Collect blood cultures using an aseptic technique.
  • Obtain urine specimens, label, and prepare for lab analysis.
  • Collect drug screens according to guidelines and procedures set in the Drug Screen Collection Manuals.
  • Process incoming requisitions and samples according to specimen processing protocols.
  • Centrifuges and stores blood samples for subsequent testing.
  • Maintain adequate stock of supplies; stock/organize supplies and phlebotomy baskets and collection stations.
  • Investigate and verify unusual orders with the units, physicians, and/or reference lab.
  • Assist in the training of students or new employees as directed by the supervisor.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision required.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action required.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and ability to work all shift patterns, including weekends and holidays, to ensure appropriateness and continuity of care for patients.
  • Heartsaver CPR American Heart Association certification required.
  • PBT (ASCP or ASPT) or equivalent certification preferred within two years of employment.
  • One year experience in phlebotomy and/or specimen processing and/or lab billing preferred.
