Job Overview

The Middle School Guidance Counselor plays a crucial role in establishing and overseeing a comprehensive counseling program aimed at addressing the academic, social, and career development needs of students at Gestalt Community Schools.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development and Oversight:

  • Utilizes data-driven insights to shape and evaluate the effectiveness of the counseling program in alignment with the school's educational objectives.
  • Facilitates the seamless transition of student records and data across academic years, ensuring accurate scheduling and registration processes.
  • Collaborates with school leadership to design and implement a robust counseling framework.
  • Communicates the goals and benefits of the counseling program to students, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Devotes the majority of time (approximately 80%) to direct student services, including preventive and responsive interventions, while allocating remaining time to program management and accountability.

Preventive and Responsive Interventions:

  • Designs and evaluates a comprehensive guidance curriculum.
  • Conducts individual and group counseling sessions to address students' academic, social, and personal challenges.
  • Engages with families and educators to assess student needs and recommend suitable educational pathways.
  • Organizes and delivers classroom guidance sessions focused on academic success, career exploration, and personal development.
  • Identifies student needs and coordinates referrals to appropriate resources, including school personnel and community agencies.

Community and Parental Engagement:

  • Leads and supports school-wide advisory initiatives.
  • Employs responsive counseling techniques to foster relationships with educators, students, families, and community partners, promoting cultural awareness and appreciation.
  • Assists families in navigating available services for their children through effective referral processes.
  • Provides insights to teachers regarding student data to enhance understanding and support.
  • Delivers professional development on topics relevant to the counseling program and student achievement.

Accountability Measures:

  • Prepares and submits various reports to ensure compliance with established program standards.
  • Analyzes academic performance, behavioral referrals, and attendance data to identify students in need of support.
  • Interprets assessment results to develop tailored academic plans for individual students.
Qualifications

Candidates should possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a strong commitment to the mission of Gestalt Community Schools. A proactive and strategic thinker, the ideal candidate will collaborate closely with school leadership to foster effective relationships within the school community.

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in counseling is required, with a Master's degree preferred, alongside at least one year of relevant counseling experience. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills are essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.

Experience with community resources in the Memphis area is highly desirable.
