Job Description

The Operating Room Service Coordinator, CVT (ORSC, CVT) plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our cardiovascular, thoracic, and transplant services. This position requires a registered professional nurse with a strong clinical background and excellent leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Organize and coordinate patient care activities to achieve high-quality and cost-effective outcomes.
  • Participate in direct patient care to maintain clinical expertise and serve as a role model for the CVT specialty team.
  • Assist the OR manager in establishing operational and capital budgets.
  • Contribute to data interpretation and analysis.
  • Support the OR manager in the interview process.
  • Assist the OR manager in clinical performance reviews.
  • Collaborate with the OR manager, staff, and educators to develop a CVT training and development plan.
  • Coordinate interdisciplinary specialty team meetings.
  • Develop work schedules for the specialty team using established guidelines.
  • Plan daily assignments for team members with the OR schedule coordinator.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Support management in problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Champion new initiatives and participate in unit, departmental, or hospital-wide committees.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance of all activities.
Clinical Functions:
  • Demonstrate clinical competence in CVT specialty.
  • Assess patient care needs and provide consultation or assistance to team members as needed.
  • Coordinate team development and implementation of standards of care.
  • Monitor daily activities and provide feedback to the OR manager, staff educators, and clinical nurse specialist.
  • Provide consultation for nursing and other disciplines within their area of expertise.
Professional Functions:

Leadership Functions:

  • Assist the OR manager and physicians in identifying resources needed to implement new programs and procedures.
  • Resolve recurring problems of assignment with the OR schedule coordinator.
  • Recommend and monitor implementation of cost control measures for their specialty.
  • Assist the OR manager in following up on unusual incident reports.
  • Ensure the environment is clean, attractive, safe, and free from hazards for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Identify and communicate key issues and trends to managers and make recommendations.
  • Support management team with reviewing timecards for all employees within the service line/department.
Educational Functions:
  • Provide feedback on orientee's performance to the OR manager and staff educators.
  • Develop, conduct, and participate in formal in-service programs within their area of expertise.
  • Assist staff with the development and presentation of in-services.
  • Assist team members in developing goals and activities related to their own professional self-development.
  • Participate and provide leadership on departmental and/or hospital-wide committees.
  • Create and update TIPS Manual for specialty team.
Professional/Research Functions:
  • Assume a leadership role in professional activities and assume responsibility for own continuing education.
  • Actively participate in departmental committees and attendance at designated meetings.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations.
  • Use current research findings to support and improve nursing practice.
  • Participate in studies conducted by nurse researchers or other investigators.
  • Identify areas for clinical study and promote or conduct investigations in these areas.
Additional Functions:
  • Physical ability to lift, push, pull, and move at least 35 lbs.
  • Function in the circulating nurse and surgical scrub roles.
  • Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and/or contact with potentially infectious materials, radioactive elements, and/or strong, hazardous chemical agents.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an NLN accredited school/college of nursing.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or higher.
  • CNOR or Certification within the surgical specialty.
  • Current State of Illinois, Registered Professional Nurse license.
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation recognition (healthcare provider level).
  • Supports and Coordinates CVT (Cardiac, Vascular, Thoracic, Transplant) cross-training.
  • Ability to support team call requirement of 1,386 hours in a 6 week schedule.
  • Supports training of the insertion of elective/emergent Cardiopulmonary bypass, V-V/V-A Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of OR nursing experience with at least 2 of those years within the surgical specialty area.
