Position Overview:
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for overseeing safety and environmental compliance activities at the plant level with minimal supervision. This role serves as a key point of contact for relevant federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. The specialist will implement comprehensive Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) programs aimed at safeguarding employees and mitigating risks to the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute health and safety initiatives in alignment with the organizational safety management framework.
- Establish and maintain an environmental management system compliant with ISO standards where applicable.
- Facilitate the training and application of safety regulations, policies, and initiatives to foster a secure working environment. Maintain OSHA logs and EHS documentation for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Support plant-level environmental compliance and sustainability efforts, including hazardous waste management, air quality control, water usage, and permit acquisition and maintenance, in collaboration with external consultants.
- Engage with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance, address issues, and foster a collaborative relationship.
- Identify and report potential violations, implementing corrective measures as necessary.
- Conduct regular safety and environmental audits, possessing the expertise to take immediate corrective actions when required.
- Propose and execute EHS-related capital projects for the facilities under support.
- Investigate all safety and environmental incidents through root cause analysis, collaborating with the Operations team to implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Oversee workers' compensation matters for the supported facilities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge of EHS regulations to ensure compliance with federal agencies (such as OSHA and EPA) and local safety requirements.
- Understanding of safety protocols in manufacturing environments, including industrial hygiene, ergonomics, machinery safety, training on industrial vehicles, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Experience in executing extensive safety, environmental, and sustainability initiatives.
- Ability to conduct investigations, analyze data, establish facts, and make sound judgments based on evidence.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.
- Capability to work independently, managing tasks and projects to completion while adhering to deadlines.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, or related scientific fields, or equivalent education and experience.
Experience Requirements:
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in EHS, preferably within a manufacturing context.
