Position Overview

UNM Medical Group, Inc. is seeking a qualified Forensic Pathologist to contribute to our esteemed School of Medicine. This role is a PRN opportunity based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Role Summary

Under minimal supervision, the Forensic Pathologist will deliver and oversee direct healthcare services for a designated patient demographic.

Essential Qualifications for the Forensic Pathologist Position:

Medical degree with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience, which may encompass residency in a pertinent medical specialty. Must possess State of New Mexico and Federal DEA Certification; Medical Specialty License or Certification; Board Certified or Board Eligible in the relevant medical specialty. Verification of education and licensure will be required upon selection.

Key Responsibilities of the Forensic Pathologist:

  • Ability to observe, evaluate, and document symptoms, reactions, and patient progress.
  • Capability to mentor, guide, and train clinical professionals and/or students in the area of expertise.
  • Understanding of contemporary principles, methods, and procedures for medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment in the specialty.
  • Familiarity with legal and ethical standards governing medical care delivery.
  • Knowledge of relevant pharmaceuticals and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids, with the ability to prescribe and instruct patients on proper usage.
  • Awareness of community medical diagnostic and patient care services related to the specialty.
  • Commitment to maintaining quality, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Ability to design and deliver educational programs and workshops.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

About the Forensic Pathology Division at UNM School of Medicine:

As a nationally accredited program with a strong educational focus, the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) examines any death occurring in New Mexico that is sudden, violent, untimely, unexpected, or where the cause of death is unknown. The OMI, a specialized program within the Department of Pathology, determines the cause and manner of death in these cases and provides formal death certification.

OMI is currently in search of Forensic Pathologists to enhance our team. The ideal candidate will hold board certification as a forensic pathologist and be licensed in the State of New Mexico to perform complex external examinations and full autopsies. Familiarity with CT scans for case evaluations is preferred. The candidate should demonstrate a high level of professionalism and be capable of completing cases in accordance with NAME accreditation standards. Experience in providing court testimony and depositions is also desirable. The position requires availability for on-call hours.
