Under the general oversight of the Director of Parking & Transportation, the Campus Safety Coordinator provides daily guidance from a Lead Community Service Specialist II. This role is vital as the first point of contact for visitors, significantly contributing to the mission of the University Police Department and the institution by conducting campus patrols, offering directional assistance, and enforcing parking regulations among other responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Campus Safety and Customer Service:
- Act as a campus representative, providing directions to various campus locations and general information on behalf of the University Police and Parking and Transportation services.
- Deliver security services by patrolling campus grounds on foot, bicycle, or golf cart to safeguard the campus community and visitors from potential hazards (e.g., theft, fire, vandalism) and generating reports as necessary.
- Manage the opening, closing, and securing of campus facilities, including the activation and testing of alarm systems.
- Follow the University Police department's protocols for lost and found and property management, which includes completing reports, managing property and evidence, and maintaining accurate records.
- Provide safety escorts on foot, bicycle, or golf cart.
- Assist motorists with services such as battery jumps and vehicle unlocks for those parked on campus.
- Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic during peak times as required, utilizing traffic control devices like cones, barricades, and signs to ensure smooth vehicle and pedestrian flow during busy periods, campus events, and emergencies. Collect and store all equipment post-event.
- Collaborate with ITS staff to conduct quarterly testing of campus blue emergency phones.
Parking Enforcement:
- Support Parking and Transportation services at the Palm Desert Campus (PDC) by enforcing parking rules and regulations, patrolling parking lots, and issuing citations for violations using electronic handheld devices.
- Assist in cash collection from dispenser machines for deposit with the Cashier's office.
Administrative Duties and Training:
- Occasionally assist with general office or administrative tasks, which may include filing documents, writing incident reports, or answering phones.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent with three to six months of relevant experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of applicable procedures and regulations related to campus security, public safety, and parking.
- Familiarity with alarm and radio systems.
- Ability to identify and respond appropriately to potential hazards or criminal situations.
- Strong observational skills to recall details and incidents.
- Capability to address and resolve parking and traffic issues.
- Proficient in writing standard incident reports clearly and concisely.
- Ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of individuals, including the campus community, the general public, and law enforcement personnel.
- Skill in handling sensitive situations with discretion and confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of and ability to learn to use relevant public safety equipment and systems.
- Experience in the parking industry or security roles.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary Range: $3,505 - $3,680.25 per month, with a classification salary range of $3,505 - $5,057 per month. The offered salary will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.
The CSU system offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays annually. Eligible employees may also participate in the fee waiver education program.

Full-time Non-Exempt Temporary
Academic Year Schedule: Monday - Friday, with shifts from 6:30 AM - 2:30 PM or 2:30 PM - 10:30 PM. Weekend and evening work may be required.
