Job Summary:

The Community Service Specialist plays a critical role in supporting the mission of the University Police Department and the University by conducting campus patrols, providing directional information, enforcing parking rules and regulations, and performing other duties.

Campus Safety and Customer Services:

  • Serve as a campus ambassador, providing directions to campus destinations and general information as a representative of the University Police and Parking and Transportation services department.
  • Provide security services, including patrolling of campus grounds on foot, bicycle, or golf cart to protect the campus community and visitors from hazards.
  • Responsible for opening, closing, and securing campus facilities, including activating and deactivating alarm systems.
  • Adhere to the University Police department's lost and found and property management process.
  • Provide safety escorts by foot, bicycle, or golf cart.
  • Provide motorist assistance services, such as battery jumps and vehicle unlocks, to anyone parked on campus grounds.
  • Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic during peak hours as needed, utilizing traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, and signs.
  • Collaborate with ITS staff to perform quarterly testing of campus blue emergency phones.

Parking Enforcement:

  • Provide Parking and Transportation support services to the Palm Desert Campus, including enforcement of parking rules and regulations, patrolling of parking lots, and issuing citations for parking violations.
  • Assist in collecting cash from dispenser machines for deposit with the Cashier's office.

Administration and Training:

  • Assist in general office or other administrative duties, which may include filing documents, writing incident reports, or answering phones.
  • Perform other classification-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three to six months related experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of applicable procedures and regulations related to campus security, public safety, and parking.
  • Working knowledge of alarm and radio systems.
  • Ability to detect and respond appropriately to potential hazardous or crime situations.
  • Ability to observe and recall details and incidents.
  • Ability to act and resolve parking and traffic problems.
  • Ability to write standard incident reports in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of individuals, including the campus community, general public, and law enforcement personnel.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and the ability to learn how to use applicable public safety-related equipment and systems.
  • Experience in the parking industry or security functions.

Compensation and Benefits:

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package, including medical, dental, and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year.

Position Information:

Full-time Non-Exempt Temporary

Academic year schedule: Monday - Friday 6:30am-2:30pm OR 2:30-10:30PM. Weekends and evenings may be required.
