Overview

The Joint Commission is seeking qualified physician candidates for intermittent roles, specifically .14 for international positions and .32 for candidates based in the United States.

We are particularly interested in candidates located in the United States, Singapore, UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

As a surveyor, you will assess international healthcare organizations as assigned. This role requires applying analytical skills and deductive reasoning to evaluate the compliance of healthcare organizations with relevant standards and the effectiveness of their care delivery systems. You will engage with healthcare organization staff in meaningful discussions regarding standards compliance to identify areas for improvement. Additionally, you will prepare exit reports that clearly connect measurable deficiencies with potential vulnerabilities in systems and associated organizational risks. This information will be communicated effectively to healthcare leadership in a constructive and collaborative manner. Participation in other Joint Commission International activities may also be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations of international organizations eligible for accreditation/certification, either on-site or remotely. Review and assess pre-survey information and carry out all necessary pre-survey activities. Select patient records based on the evaluation of the client application.
  • Analyze care delivery systems and evaluate patient care environments to assess compliance with operational standards. Interview staff and patients to gauge the organization's adherence to standards.
  • Review documents such as policies, procedures, meeting minutes, clinical standards, and patient records to assess compliance with Joint Commission International standards and evidence of performance improvement.
  • Utilize established survey processes to conduct required activities, document observations accurately using survey technology, and participate in discussions to integrate findings.
  • Provide a comprehensive rationale for each documented finding and link observations to potential system vulnerabilities and opportunities for improvement in patient care and safety.
  • Report survey findings in a timely and accurate manner, following JCI Scoring Guidelines to determine measurable element scores based on evidence evaluation.
  • Prepare exit reports for organizations and explain the intent of standards to personnel in a professional manner.
  • Consult with organization leaders on significant healthcare issues and communicate organization-specific information to the central office as needed.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Joint Commission International standards and relevant local and regional laws.
  • Participate in the evaluation of survey team performance and follow safety policies while on-site.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development activities as required.
  • Other duties may include participating in special projects, assisting in the development of standards, and serving on accreditation committees.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), or equivalent qualifications in dental surgery (DDS).

Certification/Licensure:

  • Current professional licensure in relevant disciplines is required. Physicians must be Board Eligible or Board Certified at the time of hire.
  • No history of disciplinary actions related to professional licenses.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of recent experience, including three years of direct clinical experience and two years in senior management roles. Experience as a consultant to healthcare organizations is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with healthcare operations, clinical practices, and performance improvement methods.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission International standards and participation in at least two domestic or international surveys is preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to assess compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including multi-cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and concisely.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry 25-50 pounds, sit or stand for extended periods, and travel extensively.
  • Willingness to travel to various countries for accreditation purposes.

Availability:

  • Must be available for intermittent work, with the ability to commit to one calendar week per month.
  • Participation in corporate orientation and ongoing education is required.
