Position Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for demonstrating foundational skills in the transport, operation, and maintenance of specialized machinery utilized in the recovery of railroad incidents. This role involves lifting and repositioning derailed rail cars and locomotives, as well as performing operator duties at chemical remediation sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate heavy machinery effectively.
- Drive tractor-trailers or escort vehicles as needed.
- Service and maintain heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and related tools.
- Handle and manage heavy steel chains, blocks, cables, and other apparatus.
- Access and navigate under derailed rail cars and various equipment.
- Clean, maintain, and prepare equipment using both small and large tools.
- Operate cutting torches and welding apparatus.
- Utilize a variety of hand and power tools safely.
- Lift up to 150 lbs, with frequent handling of items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Work at elevated heights on rail cars, bridges, or in aquatic environments.
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Learn and implement hazardous materials handling protocols.
- Maintain accurate service records for all equipment.
- Ensure the safekeeping and proper use of company tools.
- Perform additional related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma preferred.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a similar or related field.
- Possession of a Class A CDL is required.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Ability to conduct thorough inspections.
- Recognize the need for maintenance checks and locate specific components on equipment.
- Demonstrate proper procedures during equipment inspections.
- Apply mechanical knowledge effectively.
- Understand equipment limitations during operation.
- Exhibit safe practices when setting up and dismantling equipment, including proper lifting and winching techniques.
Work Schedule:
- Availability to work Monday through Sunday, including on-call shifts for urgent derailment responses.
- Standard hours are 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, with on-call duties as needed.
- The Response Team must be accessible at all times, ready to respond to emergencies.
