About the Role

We're seeking a Software Development Engineer I to join our Discovery Team, the heart of the customer journey at Zappos. As an SDE1, you will contribute significantly to software development for the core customer journey, from Homepage to checkout: Search, Search Results, Homepage, Ads, Widgets, Recommendations, and more.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and Maintain - You will play a key role in the development and maintenance of Java-based applications leveraging AWS services (ECS, SQS, S3, DynamoDB).
  • Collaborate for Success - You will work with peers to improve how your team's software is constructed.
  • Address Ambiguity - You will take well-understood feature specifications and deliver working code.
  • Solve Problems - You will work on problems with visible risks or roadblocks.
  • Uphold Best Practices - You will collaborate with peers on the full software development lifecycle.
  • Learn and Grow - You will seek and act on feedback to improve your code.

Requirements

  • Experience - 1+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  • Expertise - Proficiency in at least one programming language and a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals.
  • Communication Skills - Effective verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS Knowledge - Hands-on experience with AWS technologies and familiarity with Java 8+, especially with the Spring Framework.
  • Search Engine Experience - Experience with search engines (ideally Solr), enhancing our customers' discovery journey.
  • Open Source Involvement - Familiarity with open-source tools (Git, SpringMVC, SpringBoot, Maven, Gradle, Ant, JUnit, Jenkins) to help us innovate.
  • Strategic Approach - Demonstrated ability to identify and implement operational improvements and solve complex problems with creative solutions.
