ROLE DESCRIPTION:
The Staff Attorney will collaborate with judicial officials, court personnel, and self-help center staff to enhance access to legal resources for self-represented individuals. Responsibilities include conducting workshops on family law, housing issues, restraining orders, and other civil matters. The attorney will also train and oversee volunteer attorneys, law students, JusticeCorps members, and community volunteers, while assisting in the preparation and review of court forms related to family law and housing.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver and implement legal self-help services both in-person and remotely.
- Provide substantive support to paralegals, interns, and volunteers.
- Manage a diverse workload of self-help assistance and technical inquiries.
- Engage collaboratively with the self-help team and court partners.
- Travel as required to various locations throughout Los Angeles County.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To excel in this role, candidates should possess:
- A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based case management tools.
- A passion for advocating for the legal rights of low-income individuals.
- Empathy and a commitment to supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds.
ADDITIONAL PREFERENCES:
Candidates will stand out if they have:
- Experience in a legal services environment.
- Background in conducting legal clinics or presentations.
- Knowledge of family or housing law.
- Bilingual capabilities in Spanish or another language.
