The role involves a diverse range of semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and custodial tasks at all HRT transit stops, ensuring that the agency's public image is upheld in a clean and safe manner. The primary responsibilities include maintaining the overall safety, aesthetics, cleanliness, and functionality of all transit stops across HRT bus, light rail, and ferry services. Additionally, this position entails overseeing quality assurance and control at specific passenger amenity locations serviced by contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections of all transit stops to identify routine and reported issues.
  • Perform basic assessments of conditions at transit stops and document all related assets through inventory and photography.
  • Carry out maintenance and repairs on damaged transit stop amenities, including cleaning and replacing broken shelter glass panels, and repairing or replacing benches, trash receptacles, solar lighting, and signage.
  • Utilize a variety of power and hand tools for maintenance and repair tasks, such as hoists, power washers, paint sprayers, and weed eaters.
  • Remove graffiti from passenger amenities using chemical washes and pressure washing techniques, along with necessary paint touch-ups.
  • Manage landscaping around passenger amenities, which may involve grass cutting, shrub trimming, tree branch removal, weed control, and litter collection.
  • Empty and clean HRT trash containers, disposing of waste in designated dumpsters.
  • Pressure wash amenities and surrounding pavement at HRT transit stops as instructed.
  • Perform cleaning activities, including snow and debris removal from sidewalks and stairs within 25 feet of HRT facilities and passenger amenities using hand tools or small power equipment.
  • Assist with Adopt-A-Stop installations and removals as volunteers join or leave the program.
  • Address emergencies at transit stops as needed, which may involve cleaning biohazard waste, applying limited pest control measures, and mitigating hazardous conditions such as broken glass or exposed wiring.
  • Submit maintenance work orders for issues that cannot be resolved in the field.
  • Scan QR Codes at each stop to report on cleaning or maintenance issues that have been addressed.
  • Maintain an inventory of tools and supplies, perform regular maintenance on assigned equipment, and assist in scheduling preventative maintenance for HRT-owned vehicles.
  • Respond to customer complaints or refer them to the appropriate HRT staff.
  • Assist Facilities in preparing for meetings, trainings, conferences, and special events.
  • Follow safety instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies.
  • Safely operate all vehicles and job-related equipment provided by HRT.
  • Adhere to all relevant Hampton Roads Transit policies and procedures.
  • Manage records in compliance with Hampton Roads Transit Records Management Policies.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
