About the Role

Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy is seeking an adjunct instructor to teach a new course on Financial Statements and Analysis of Healthcare. The course is a required core course for MS Health Care Policy & Management and MS Health Care Analytics & Information Technology students in their first year of study.

Course Overview

This half-semester course (6 weeks) will provide students with an overview of company and business unit finances in the healthcare industry. Students will learn to analyze an organization's financial position and manage their own operational or project budgets in healthcare. The course will cover basic accounting literacy, review and use of balance sheets, income statements, and statements of cash flows in the healthcare industry.

  • Macro-drivers of healthcare reimbursement in the United States
  • Mechanisms of healthcare reimbursement (charges, cost accounting, prospective payment, capitation, hospital inpatient vs. physician services, value/quality-based models and shared savings)
  • Managerial and strategic financing in healthcare: budget methodologies, revenue cycle, capital expenditures
Course Design

The course design should include relevant readings and problem sets that allow for applied practice of concepts. The instructor should be a practitioner or academic with direct experience or research work in healthcare accounting and finance. Recent experience in teaching graduate or professional courses is preferred.
