Hawthorne, California, United States SpaceX Full time

At SpaceX, we believe in a future where humanity explores the cosmos, and we are dedicated to developing the technologies that will make this vision a reality, with the ultimate aim of establishing human life on Mars.

As a Senior Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) Engineer on the Falcon team, you will play a pivotal role in mission design and the implementation of innovative GNC algorithms for our Falcon vehicles.

Your responsibilities will encompass the entire mission trajectory lifecycle, from gathering requirements from stakeholders, conducting design reviews, simulating and analyzing missions, to overseeing launch day operations in mission control.

Your contributions will help set the benchmark for launch frequency by supporting all aspects of Falcon missions, including launch, entry, landing, and fairing recovery. This role includes support for both commercial and government Falcon 9/Falcon Heavy missions as well as crewed Falcon 9 launches.

We seek engineers who thrive on tackling complex challenges, excel in a dynamic environment, and share our enthusiasm for advancing the aerospace sector. This is a high-impact position that directly supports SpaceX's mission to transport humans to Mars.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Execute trajectory design, optimization, and dispersion analysis for Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy missions across all flight phases, including ascent, entry, landing, and fairing recovery.
• Develop flight constants and guidance parameters, validated through analysis to meet mission objectives while adhering to mission and vehicle constraints.
• Provide support for launch and mission operations, from preflight testing through console operation, post-flight data analysis, and anomaly resolution.
• Create software automation tools for mission design, analysis, testing, and reporting.
• Conduct trade studies aimed at enhancing launch vehicle performance and reliability.
• Implement new software or algorithms to facilitate mission-specific capabilities.
• Support the complete mission lifecycle, beginning with sales and concluding with mission execution.
• Collaborate with customers to manage current missions and explore future opportunities.
• Lead the development of new vehicle capabilities.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in physics or an engineering discipline with 5+ years of professional experience in GNC or software engineering; or an advanced degree in physics or an engineering discipline with 3+ years of relevant experience.
• Proficiency in orbital mechanics, classical dynamics, modeling, and simulation.
• Experience with programming languages such as C++ and Python.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
• Master's degree or PhD in physics or an engineering discipline.
• Proven experience in developing, debugging, and deploying software utilized in real-world applications/projects.
• Demonstrated project or professional experience in launch vehicle and/or spacecraft systems.

• Ability to independently solve complex problems with minimal supervision, whether as an individual contributor or as part of a collaborative team.

• Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Expertise in building intricate software systems using C++ and Python, including backend infrastructure and user interfaces.
