Job Title: Reading Specialist

Essex County Schools is seeking a highly skilled Reading Specialist to provide school-level leadership in English/Language Arts (ELA) instruction. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with students, teachers, and administrators to plan and implement quality Tier 1 reading instruction, develop and implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions, and provide professional development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with teachers to improve student outcomes in reading and writing through co-planning, co-teaching, and modeling lessons.
  • Support teachers in understanding and delivering the Virginia Standards of Learning in English through extensive professional development and coaching.
  • Coach teachers on the implementation of daily guided reading instruction, quarterly reading level assessments, and data analysis.
  • Assist teachers in creating aligned formative assessments, collecting and analyzing data, and designing targeted interventions.
  • Facilitate the use of research-based instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
  • Analyze data to identify professional development needs and provide coaching cycles of improvement.
  • Meet with school administration and central office to outline goals, objectives, and program needs.
  • Collaborate with staff on instructional programs and initiatives to provide extended day/extended year learning opportunities in ELA.
Requirements:
  • Advanced knowledge of content, concepts, principles, and methodologies of reading instruction in a public school setting.
  • Knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning, the Essex Strategic Plan, and the Essex Instructional Models.
  • Proven ability to effectively plan and deliver research-based practices in teaching reading.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, and administrators.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Virginia endorsement as a Reading Specialist or eligibility for Virginia endorsement as Reading Specialist.
  • Extensive experience in teaching reading, student intervention, and leadership experience in leading reading teams and professional development.
