POSITION SUMMARY:
This role is essential to the mission of the Y, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing community through youth development, health promotion, and social responsibility. As a Lifeguard at the Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut, you will foster a secure and welcoming environment that respects all individuals while ensuring safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and adjacent areas in line with YMCA standards. Your responsibilities include mitigating potential risks, enforcing regulations, and maintaining hygienic swimming conditions. You will establish and uphold discipline while executing your responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age of 15
- Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration
- Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent
- Completion of New Employee Orientation including Child Abuse Prevention, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Sexual Harassment Training
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
- Demonstration of lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
- Exhibit leadership, maturity, and self-control while serving as a positive role model
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain vigilant surveillance of the pool area.
- Know and review all emergency protocols and respond to emergencies promptly according to YMCA policies; complete related documentation as necessary.
- Address challenges with potential solutions in a timely manner.
- Understand and consistently apply safety regulations, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas.
- Remain composed and objective under pressure or when faced with challenges.
- Keep accurate records as mandated by the YMCA and/or state health department regulations.
- Conduct equipment inspections and ensure necessary equipment is available.
- Be prepared for rescue at all times.
- Familiarize yourself with the Regional YMCA Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and your role within it.
- Attend all staff meetings and in-service training sessions; maintain rescue skills and competencies.
- Adhere to all aquatic procedures and guidelines, including those related to health and safety, chemical testing, documentation, and staff expectations as required by the YMCA and state health department regulations.
- Ensure cleanliness of the pools and surrounding areas.
- Conduct yourself professionally while on duty.
- Participate in and support the Y's Annual Support Campaign.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
- Medium work demand: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Hear sounds and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and around the designated area of responsibility.
- Remain alert with no lapses in consciousness.
- See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility. Close visual acuity is required to perform activities, as well as to assess neatness, accuracy, and thoroughness of assigned work.
- The worker may be required to operate under various physical conditions that may be hazardous, such as slippery or wet surfaces.
- Subject to environmental conditions; protections from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature variations.
- Must be able to:
- Run, jump, swim, and lift a minimum of 1/3 of their own body weight.
- Stand or sit in a lifeguard chair for extended periods.
- Consistently flex and rotate head and neck.
- Occasionally bend, twist, crouch, squat, kneel, and climb stairs.
- Occasionally crawl, push, pull, reach, and lift above shoulder level.
- Work on wet ground and slippery surfaces.
- Use hands in repetitive motion, grasping, and fine manipulation with both hands.
- See and observe all sections of the pool area of responsibility with or without reasonable accommodation.
