POSITION SUMMARY:

This role is integral to the mission of the Y, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing community through youth development, health initiatives, and social responsibility. A Lifeguard at the Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut fosters a secure and welcoming environment that respects all individuals while ensuring safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and adjacent areas, adhering to YMCA policies and procedures. Responsibilities include identifying and mitigating potential hazards, enforcing regulations, and maintaining sanitary conditions for swimming. This position requires establishing and upholding discipline while executing duties with respect.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age of 15
  • Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent
  • Completion of New Employee Orientation, including Child Abuse Prevention, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Sexual Harassment Training
  • Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness at certification level
  • Demonstration of lifeguard skills in line with YMCA standards
  • Exhibit leadership, maturity, self-control, and serve as a positive role model

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintain vigilant surveillance of the pool area.
  2. Familiarize with and review all emergency protocols, responding to emergencies promptly in accordance with YMCA policies; complete necessary reports.
  3. Address challenges with timely solutions.
  4. Understand and consistently apply safety regulations, policies, and guidelines for aquatic areas.
  5. Remain composed and objective under pressure or when faced with challenges.
  6. Keep accurate records as mandated by the YMCA and/or state health department regulations.
  7. Conduct equipment checks and ensure the availability of necessary equipment.
  8. Be prepared for rescue at all times.
  9. Know the Regional YMCA Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and your role within it.
  10. Participate in all staff meetings and in-service training; maintain rescue skills and competencies.
  11. Adhere to all aquatic procedures and guidelines, including health and safety protocols, chemical testing, forms, reports, and staff expectations as required by the YMCA and state health department regulations.
  12. Ensure cleanliness of pools and surrounding areas.
  13. Conduct oneself professionally while on duty.
  14. Engage in and support the Y's Annual Support Campaign.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
  • Medium work demand: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and surrounding areas.
  • Remain alert with no lapses in consciousness.
  • Observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility, requiring close visual acuity to perform activities and assess neatness, accuracy, and thoroughness of assigned work.
  • Work under various physical conditions that may be hazardous, such as slippery or wet surfaces.
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protections from weather but not necessarily from temperature changes.
  • Must be able to:
    • Run, jump, swim, and lift a minimum of 1/3 of their own body weight.
    • Stand or sit in a lifeguard chair for extended periods.
    • Consistently flex and rotate head and neck.
    • Occasionally bend, twist, crouch, squat, kneel, and climb stairs.
    • Occasionally crawl, push, pull, reach, and lift above shoulders.
    • Work on wet ground and slippery surfaces.
    • Use hands in repetitive motion, grasping, and fine manipulation with both hands.
    • Observe all sections of the pool area of responsibility with or without reasonable accommodation.
