Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Horticulturist to join our team at Duke University. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of horticultural duties, including the preparation, maintenance, planning, and design of landscape enhancements for our grounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and participate in the proper care of Duke University landscape and grounds, including trimming, edging, weeding, pruning of trees and shrubs, and application of herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides.
  • Inspect assigned areas for plant damage, disease, soil erosion, or landscape problems, and recommend corrective actions as necessary.
  • Provide advanced technical guidance to grounds personnel in the proper maintenance and care of shrubs, trees, flowers, and groundcovers.
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate new and existing landscape plans based on aesthetic, soil, light, maintenance, and cost considerations.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new landscape plans, and design and sketch ornamental plantings according to color schemes, plant characteristics, and landscape requirements.
Requirements
  • Associate degree in horticulture or two years post-secondary education in botany or a related field.
  • One year of experience in horticulture and/or landscaping, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • North Carolina driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Public garden experience.
