Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Electrical Maintenance Technician to join our team at Duquesne University. As a key member of our facilities management team, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electrical equipment, fire alarm systems, emergency generators, fire protection systems, and low voltage systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Reads and interprets construction drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams, schematics, photos, blueprints, and specifications to properly install or modify electrical wiring and equipment to comply with electrical codes and regulations.
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled job assignments to electrical systems, including installing electrical conduit, wiremold, conduit trays, and duct banks, and pulling electrical wire through installed conduit.
  • Splices and joins wire using appropriate tools for low voltage, installs all phases of grounding leads, connects motors, fixtures, wiring devices, controls, sound, appliance equipment, and wiring systems to power cables, and installs controls for new equipment including electrical switches, circuit breakers, and relays.
  • Tests electrical circuits and equipment for compatibility and safety using test instruments such as volt/ohmmeter, meg-ohm-meter, phase rotation meter, amp meter, recording meter, infrared thermal meter, light meter, circuit tracer, or continuity tester.
  • Installs electric conductors and conduit as needed to complete tasks, performs work on specialized electrical equipment such as emergency generators, transformers, variable frequency drives, uninterruptible power supply, and fire pumps with appropriate training.
  • Performs work on various electronic equipment such as fire, smoke, fire extinguishing systems, automatic sprinkler control systems, and emergency alarms, public address systems, and hot water tanks with appropriate training.
  • Troubleshoots and isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment and systems, performs general maintenance duties as directed to finish and complete all projects/tasks, and ensures proper care in the use of maintenance equipment and supplies.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience in electrical maintenance.
  • Valid City of Pittsburgh registered electrician license.
  • Valid driver's license.

Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential job functions.

This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Electrical systems and wiring principles.
  • Electrical troubleshooting and repair principles.
  • Basic electronics systems and wiring principles.
  • Construction drawings, sketches, blueprints, diagrams, and specifications.
  • Testing electrical circuits and equipment for compatibility and safety.
  • The occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Current trade methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Local and national electrical codes.
  • Operation, maintenance, and repair of designated area equipment.
  • Applicable University, state, and federal regulations, policies, and procedures related to the position.
  • Building and facilities maintenance, safety, and awareness of security issues.

Willingness to adjust work schedule when necessary and as determined by the supervisor, including work shift changes, willingness to work overtime and holidays, basic computer skills and willingness to learn, ability to work well with others, integrity and dependability, willingness and ability to follow instructions.

Good physical condition to perform the daily work assignments that are inherent in this job description.

Ability to lift and manipulate objects weighing up to 70 pounds regularly and the ability to perform work from ladders, scaffolding, and elevated surfaces.
