At Lexington School for the Deaf, we are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Substitute Instructional Assistant to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Substitute Instructional Assistant will provide support to classroom teachers in carrying out group and individual instruction of deaf students. This role requires a flexible and patient individual who can maintain a positive classroom culture and environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one instruction and coaching to students as requested by the teacher.
  • Assist in preparing classroom materials and maintaining student records.
  • Support the physical care of students and/or classroom as needed, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and ambulation.
  • Escort physically limited students from class to class and assist with mobility.
  • Supervise gym areas and other common spaces as needed.
  • Support the school's Strategic Planning initiatives and demonstrate commitment to the school's purpose, vision, and mission.

Requirements:

  • Regents or Local High School Diploma, or GED required.
  • Experience working with adolescents preferred.
  • Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) or willing to learn.

Security Clearance:

  • Medical clearance, fingerprinted by the NYC Board of Ed, and SCR and SEL clearance required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of walking in and around the building.
  • Ability to lift 15 pounds at times.
