About the Job

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Community Center Director to join our team at the City of Anderson (Indiana). As a key member of our Parks and Recreation department, you will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the Geater Center, including supervising personnel, managing programs and activities, and ensuring adherence to City and department policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and direct Geater Center personnel, including scheduling and making work assignments, providing training and corrective instruction, evaluating performance, maintaining discipline, and enforcing Center policies and procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of office and recreation supplies, initiating/authorizing/submitting requisitions for items as needed.
  • Oversee maintenance of various Center records as required, such as activity schedules, activity participation/attendance, fee receipts, and accidents/injuries.
  • Assist supervisor and other department personnel in developing and implementing policies for the Center building and grounds rental, including determining schedules, assigning appropriate personnel, and overseeing the collection and receipting of fees.
  • Participate in developing diversified Center programs and activities according to department mission and programming guidelines, encouraging and promoting cross-cultural programs among all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and ability levels.
  • Co-sponsor programs with related recreational agencies, determines appropriate fees, and contracts special class instructors as appropriate.
  • Periodically meets with supervisor and other department personnel, related agencies, and the public to identify community recreation needs and evaluate effectiveness of Center programs in meeting identified needs.
  • Promotes Center activities by working with supervisor and other department personnel in describing programs in brochures and other marketing efforts, and occasionally in preparing Center promotional materials and making public speaking presentations.
  • Attends department and Park Board meetings as required, reporting Center activities and responding to inquiries.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in recreation by occasionally attending related workshops as authorized.
  • Periodically makes recommendations to department Superintendent regarding local, state, and federal grant sources and prepares applications as authorized.
  • Prepares and submits to department Superintendent the annual Center budget, including reviewing current year expenditures and projecting next year's costs.
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate Degree in parks and recreation or related area preferred.
  • Possession of first aid certification preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation program management and department and Center policies and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and direct Center personnel, including scheduling and making work assignments, providing training and corrective instruction, evaluating performance, maintaining discipline, and enforcing the Center policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of budget administration, and ability to prepare the Center budget, and ensure cost-effective operations and maintenance of related records.
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare reports, grant applications, and other required documents.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other department personnel, Park Board, related recreation agencies, program participants and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend, and/or evening hours and occasionally travel out of town for workshops, sometimes, overnight.
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.
