A Paraeducator serves typically developing children and children with developmental disabilities in a child care setting age birth to 5 years. The person in this role aids in the classroom with duties that include feeding, diapering, toileting, participating in activities/games and housekeeping duties. This is a part-time position.
Key Responsibilities- Classroom Support: Assist the Teacher in providing a warm and nurturing environment in which the children can grow.
- Child Assessment: Assess the child's day-to-day strengths and needs through observation and maintain records as required.
- Classroom Planning: Provide input to classroom planning, both long-term and short-term.
- Communication: Maintain open communication with Teacher, parents, and other staff members.
- Safety and Compliance: Comply with Agency and departmental safety policies and procedures.
- Additional Tasks: Perform other tasks as assigned.
- Communication Skills: Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds in person.
- Visual Acuity: Ability to determine and identify items and children in the periphery, near, and far visual fields.
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Prefer 1 year working with special needs children or children aged 2 weeks to 5 years.
- Language Skills: Ability to read and write the English language.
- Physical Demands: Ability to perform work tasks within the physical demand requirements as outlined below.
This position operates in a classroom setting both indoors and outdoors.
Physical DemandsSitting: 1 - 2 hours in an 8-hour work shift. Alternates to standing on a frequent basis.
Standing: 4 - 6 hours in an 8-hour work shift. Alternates to sitting on a frequent basis.
Walking: 1/2 - 1 hour in an 8-hour work shift.
Lifting: 1 - 10 lbs. Continuously. Toys, chairs, files, etc.
Carrying: 1 - 10 lbs. Continuously. Toys, chairs, files, etc.
Pushing: Required to push children in wheelchairs on a continuous basis.
Bending: Continuously.
Squatting: Continuously.
Kneeling: Continuously.
Crawling: Continuously.
Climbing: Rarely - stairs (Frequently for multi-level facilities).
Grasping: Continuously.
Reaching: Continuously.
Fine Manipulation: Continuously.
