Job Title: Occupational Therapist

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Occupational Therapist to join our team at Starfish Family Services. As an Occupational Therapist, you will play a vital role in providing services to children birth to age five who have various medical, developmental, physical and/or mental health needs within an Early Childhood Education center.

Job Summary:

The Occupational Therapist will provide comprehensive assessments, treatment planning, and developmentally supportive interventions to children and their families. This includes providing services that are family-centered, culturally and linguistically responsive, and focused on developing, improving, sustaining, and restoring communication skills in activities of daily living (ADLs) within the context of a child and family's natural environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive assessments, treatment planning, and developmentally supportive interventions to children and their families.
  • Develop, improve, sustain, and restore communication skills in activities of daily living (ADLs) within the context of a child and family's natural environment.
  • Educate clients, families, teachers, and multidisciplinary professionals on therapeutic interventions and provide modeling opportunities of interventions to be used throughout a client and family's daily routines.
  • Promote maximum independence by selecting and constructing interventions according to individual's physical capacity, intelligence level, and interest.
  • Evaluate results of occupational skills by observing, noting, and evaluating patient's progress, recommending and implementing adjustments and modifications.
  • Complete discharge planning by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care workers as appropriate; contributing to patient care conferences.
  • Assure continuation of therapeutic plan following discharge by designing and instructing patients, families, and caregivers in home programs; recommending and/or providing assistive equipment; recommending outpatient or home health follow-up programs.
  • Maintain child files according to Starfish Family Services guidelines.
  • Develop and conduct in-service training programs for agency staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy required. A Master's degree or Doctorate preferred.
  • A current State of Michigan Occupational Therapy license required.
  • Successful completion of the National Certification Examination for Registered Occupational Therapists required.
  • Knowledge of typical and atypical early childhood development required.
  • At least one year of direct work experience in providing services to children and their families is required; three to five years preferred.
  • Experience in clinic, community/home-based, and early education and/or school settings is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of theory and intervention with infants and toddlers, family systems treatment, and good understanding of child development and common child medical and behavioral issues required.
  • Must be computer literate - fax, email, and Microsoft office at minimum.
  • Ability to effectively, appropriately, and accurately communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet productivity expectations as assigned by program supervisor and director.
  • Ability and willingness to abide by all Starfish Family Services confidentiality policies.
  • Ability and desire for personal and professional growth, and skill development.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and sensitivity and to respect the privacy and special needs of our clients.
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
  • Must have a commitment to the welfare of the children and families the program serves and to the delivery of quality services.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Must have the ability to work with all members of the community regardless of race, age, sex, and cultural or ethnic background.
  • Must maintain professional and ethical standards.
  • Ability to represent the agency in a professional manner and develop new relationships with other community agencies.
