Position Overview:

The Staff Attorney plays a crucial role in ensuring adherence to legal standards, reporting obligations, and enforcement protocols within the institution. This position involves providing legal counsel and recommending necessary policy and procedural adjustments in light of evolving laws and judicial precedents.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the General Counsel to interpret the legal framework governing the institution.
  • Offer legal and policy guidance across various domains impacting the institution, including employment law, student legal matters, intellectual property, and organizational governance.
  • Conduct investigations into compliance-related complaints and coordinate with relevant departments.
  • Assist in the development, drafting, and review of institutional policies and procedures.
  • Negotiate and review contracts and agreements, ensuring compliance with legal standards.
  • Manage responses to public records requests and maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a J.D. or LLB from an ABA-accredited law school and hold a license to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction or obtain licensure within a specified timeframe. A minimum of one year of experience as a practicing attorney or in-house counsel in a complex organizational setting is required.

Essential Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of higher education law, employment law, and risk management.
  • Excellent analytical, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in writing and advocacy, with a focus on creative problem-solving.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively with diverse groups.
Work Environment:

This position is primarily office-based, requiring effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders. The role may involve occasional physical activity and the use of office equipment.

Preferred Experience:

Experience in employment law, risk management, and legal representation within a public college or university setting is highly desirable.

Training Requirements:

Completion of annual training on campus security and Title IX regulations is mandatory.
