POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the general guidance of the Bridge Foreman, this role entails the operation of specialized heavy machinery and tools for the upkeep, restoration, and construction of County drainage systems. The position also extends operational assistance to the Road, Bridge, and Junk Vehicle Department while undertaking a variety of additional tasks as assigned. This role reports directly to the Bridge Foreman and does not include supervisory responsibilities.

This position necessitates a greater emphasis on manual labor tasks compared to equipment operation duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate should possess knowledge and skills in operating specialized heavy machinery and tools, as well as an understanding of bridge site maintenance and construction standards, material specifications, and basic mechanical diagnostics and repairs. The ability to uphold safety protocols, work efficiently under challenging site conditions, and collaborate with team members is essential. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, and following both written and verbal instructions; operate heavy machinery safely and skillfully; perform strenuous manual labor; work outdoors in various weather conditions; and foster cooperative relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

The required expertise is typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma along with three (3) years of relevant experience in heavy equipment operation, road/bridge construction, or a related technical field. Applicants must hold a valid driver's license issued by the state of Montana or obtain one within a specified timeframe after hiring and must be insurable under the County's liability policies.

Equipment operators are required to complete specific training and certifications within six months of employment, including Flagger Certification, First Aid/CPR, MSHA-46 (Miner) Certification, Wildland Fire Training, and Work Zone Safety Training.

Additionally, a Class A CDL, Type 1 driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements is required, or the ability to obtain such within a designated period after hiring.
