Position Overview
The Clinical Nurse Coordinator in the Neurology Department is responsible for the nursing oversight of patients. This role is pivotal in managing and administering activities that ensure the provision of safe, efficient, and therapeutically effective care to an outpatient population. The coordinator will engage in both direct and indirect patient care, employing the nursing process under the guidance of attending physicians. This position also encompasses patient and family education, quality assurance and improvement initiatives, training for both nursing and non-nursing staff, and support for research protocols as necessary.

Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary clinics, supporting a team of six Neuromuscular specialists focused on conditions such as muscular dystrophies and ALS.
  • Guiding patients through their healthcare journey, including linking them with resources both within and outside the healthcare system.
  • Acting as a clinical leader in the collaboration between the multidisciplinary clinic and organizations such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association and ALS Association.
  • Facilitating connections for patients to research opportunities and specific clinical trials when available.

Required Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Consideration will be given to a suitable combination of education, training, and experience.
  • One year of relevant education may substitute for one year of required work experience.

Experience
  • 3-4 years of patient care experience, ideally in neurology nursing, with a focus on supervising nursing staff and developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and procedures related to outpatient care.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Current RN licensure in the District of Columbia and Virginia is required.
  • BLS certification is required upon hire.

Skills and Competencies
  • Must be an experienced nurse, well-versed in both outpatient and inpatient environments.
  • Familiarity with medical equipment and instruments essential for patient care.
  • Proficient in applying and adapting professional nursing principles, methods, and techniques to ensure continuous patient care.
  • Strong communication and report writing abilities.
  • Capability to facilitate effective communication and treatment among physicians, ancillary staff, and patients.
  • Proficient in personal computer usage and word processing applications.
